What? Bakewell goodness in a roled-y up-y sort of way?! You must be ruddy joking Gwen. I am not reader. I am not.

Make your swiss roll cake in the normal manner, I used a Delia Smith recipe;

50g of Butter

75g of sugar

2 eggs

110g self raising flour

And I added a teaspoon of almond extract

Then for bakewellness:


Cherry jam (I actually used apricot)

Icing sugar

Glace cherries

Chocolate to drizzle

Mix up all the ingredients, spread thinly in a wide tin, or silicone swiss roll tray (thank you father Christmas), and bake for 10 minutes on gas mark 6.

Then spread liberally with cherry(or indeed any type) jam, and lay on a thin layer of marzipan. Then the best part; roly poly times. And adorn generously with icing, drizzled chocolate and glace cherries.

This cake went down particularly well with the old family, Mum said it looked like ‘one of those Caterpillars’, no I do not know what kind of Caterpillar she refers to.
